Early parliamentary and local elections were held in Montenegro
on Sunday
Nearly 424 thousand citizens were to elect 78 members of the republican
parliament and members of
21 municipal councils. The elections were successful since over 60%
of the electorate turned out
already by 6 P.M. News agencies report that all the necessary measures
have been taken in order to
ensure the regularity of the elections, and the republican electoral
commission did not receive one
single complaint until 6 P.M. Most of the polling stations were closed
at 8 P.M., as envisaged by the
law, but it was made possible for all the voters who found themselves
at the polling stations at the
time of their closing to vote, only the electoral committees had to
determine their number and identity.
The first unofficial results are expected to be known on Monday morning,
and according to the
republican law on the elections, the republican electoral commission
is obliged to announce the official
results 36 hours after the closing of the polling stations which also
represents the deadline for
submitting and ruling on complaints regarding the regularity of the
elections. On Sunday, the voters
chose between the candidates of 15 political parties and two coalitions.
The parliamentary elections
were monitored by 227 observers, 192 of whom were from abroad. 334
foreign and 160 domestic
reporters have been accredited for reporting on the elections.(Radio
